SYNAESTHESIA:

MORTAR AND PESTLE

The mortar and pestle departs from the conventional stone mortar with its oblong, ergonomic shape, lightness, sensory experience, and after usage. The design uses the idea of a triangular base to alter motion, rhythm, and sound during usage, giving life to a heavily grounded object that is commonly used but often overlooked.

The user has to grip the pestle with his/her dominant hand and the narrow end of the mortar with the other. Condiments  can be grounded in a triangular motion in the concaved belly of the mortar. When finished, tilt the mortar towards the pouring end and use the bamboo brush attached to remove the pounded condiment.

Inspired by the African wild dog for its tenancity and freedom, the usage promotes the imagination and taste of freedom of being “in the wild”. The user is not just confined to the space of the kitchen, but living with an audacity to create out-of-the-world palettes.

To create that feeling of intuitiveness, the mortar is designed with a concaved shape similar to that of the dog’s skull. To provide the sense of freedom, characterised as the motion of running free in the open plains, the dog’s running tempo synthesised into a rhythm - a sharp-sharp-soft repetition. (The  front paws hit the ground first, before the hind legs hit the ground together.) The three beats are build into the pounding motion by a triangular base.
